Antique Garden Statues
Antique garden statues can be used add interest and character to a garden. Used throughout history, Ancient Roman gardens have been excavated and many examples have been dug up from Pompeii. A little later down the line, the Victorian and Georgian period had some wonderful statues – many gracing stately homes and gardens.
A sign of wealth and prosperity, formal statues and busts of maidens, cherubs, putti and Greek gods were very popular in these times, as well as biblical figures and angels. Often made from lead, stone or reconstituted stone and even terracotta, antique garden statues were life size and often raised on plinths.
Animals were also popular from sporting game to lions and eagles, and many are still used as a focal point in gardens today. Chinese themes add great interest to a garden, from stone temples and lanterns, experience oriental landscaping from your home with the right type of plants.

Not only this, but a central water fountain can be used to make large driveways appear more formal. If this is the look you’d like for your outdoor space, why not consider a central water feature for your garden?

Some of the most important and impressive water fountains can be found around the country at National Trust properties and large country houses. When visiting these gardens, fountains are often one of the most favoured spectacles for visitors.

Normally around 2ft tall, the most popular are reclaimed stone bird baths which would have been carved out of local stone.
Interestingly, you can identify where a piece originated by the colour of the stone. Cotswolds stone is yellow in colour, Bath stone is a creamy beige whereas red stone would have come from the Midlands.

Staddle Stones
Originally used as supporting bases for granaries, hayricks and game larders - staddle stones were carved from local stone by stone masons. An important job in years gone by, staddle stones were not for ornamental use like they are today.
The stones lifted the granaries above the ground to protect the stored grain from vermin and water seepage. This was an innovative design as the vermin could not get over the lip of the top of the staddle stone. The top was separate from the base and gave a structure with a mushroom appearance.
Today, they are used for decorative pieces in the garden and are effective as a centerpiece. They can often be seen to line a driveway to create an impact at the entrance of a property.
