How are cast iron radiators put together?

Building A DIY Cast Iron Radiator

If you’d like to build your DIY radiator at home, you can purchase Carron radiators in their component form from us.

How DIY cast iron radiators are built

To build your DIY radiator, you'll need to:

Ensure the radiator is sufficiently raised from the floor so the tool can be turned unhindered. Insert the two connectors, turning them a ¼ turn - the minimum amount to successfully hold the connectors in place. Note: each connector has a left-hand thread and a right hand thread.
Place a gasket around each connector.
Offer up a section of your DIY radiator squarely, then turn the first connector a couple of turns so that one end of the section is secure, but loosely attached.
Repeat the procedure at the other end of the section. Tighten the connector a couple of turns at a time moving from one connector to the other until both are tight.
For a radiator up to 16 sections long, two leg sections are normally required. For a 17 or 19 section long radiator, you will need 3 legs and for an 18 or 20 section you will need 4 legs.

Please ensure you read the following notes before fitting your valves:

When screwing the valve tail into the bush, turn it so that it's finger tight. Next, using a spanner, turn it till there is only moderate resistance.

Using a 4” (100mm) spanner it is difficult to over tighten. However, when using a 8” spanner it can be easy to over tighten and crack the bush.

Ensure that a thread sealant is applied to the valve tail threads to get a water tight seal. Sealants are usually available from your plumbers, however, PTFE tape is an acceptable alternative.

Normally, it's not necessary to unscrew the bushes, but if for any reason you do, retighten them gently, enough only to create a good seal.

Please note that 18” Stilsons should not be used. The torque from an 8” adjustable spanner is more than enough to create a good seal.

Can you paint cast iron radiators?

Painting Cast Iron Radiators

Our reclaimed radiators can be bought in a variety of different colours or finishes, or individually stylised to your specific requirements. Whether painted or sprayed, we aim to accurately match the detailing and décor of your home. Paint should be suitable for metal, but there are no other requirements for the type of paint you choose.

How are cast iron radiators tested?

Testing Our Cast Iron Radiators

We are committed to producing high-quality reclaimed radiators for our customers. All radiators are put through their paces to ensure that they offer optimum performance.

Prior to dispatch, we conduct pressure tests on every radiator. We’ll set the pressure to 8 bars over a 24-hour period, much higher than it will encounter in regular use.

How is my cast iron radiator delivered?

Delivery Services

With our worldwide shipping service available for all of our cast iron radiators and accessories, we are experienced at handling, packing and shipping the most delicate of items to your door safely. We use a variety of methods to get the goods to you – from postal services and couriers to pallet networks and international delivery services, all our shipping services are fully insured and tracked.

For the delivery of our smaller items such as radiator valves and wall stays, we use both Royal Mail and all major small parcel companies including UPS, Fedex and more.

For our cast iron radiator deliveries, we use the pallet network system. This allows us to deliver up to 50 sections of radiators per pallet. Should your radiator suffer any damage during positioning, then we can supply touch up pots of paint free of charge.

Delivery Days

We can organise our delivery to be on a weekday to suit you between 8:30am and 5:30pm. Saturday delivery and pre 12pm delivery can be arranged at an extra cost. For all radiators, next day delivery is available.

International Delivery

For Europe and the rest of the world, we use a professional shipping and packing service to deliver our radiators, which is fully insured and tracked. Shipping can be arranged direct to your door or to your nearest port. For a shipping quote or more information about delivery, contact us.

Reclaimed Radiator delivery from UKAA

The two images below show radiator delivery with a manually operated pallet truck. The driver will lower your pallet to the floor using the tail lift. The driver will then use the pump truck similar to the one below (please note this pump truck which is designed to carry heavy loads will only operate on a smooth surface i.e. tarmac) to your kerbside.

How do I balance and bleed my cast iron radiators?

Balancing Radiators

To ensure an even distribution of the hot water to the radiators in a system, you’ll need to balance your radiator. This is achieved by using the lockshield valve on each radiator to regulate the flow of water. By partially closing these valves, the radiators nearest to the pump can be restricted more than those further away.

How to balance radiators

Turn your central heating off well in advance before attempting to balance your radiator so that the water can cool. For the best result, bleed your radiators beforehand.
Locate the lockshield and control valve on the radiator. Remove the cover of the lockshield and open both valves on all radiators.
Turn the central heating back off – as water flows from one main pipe, heating the radiators together, balance them in the order in which they heat up.
Fit the thermometers to the flow and return. Turn off the lockshield valve and open again gradually until the difference between is approximately 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Repeat this process on all radiators to complete balancing. The final radiator may require the lockshield valve to be left open.

What BTU does a cast iron radiator give out?

Since all radiators can hold different amounts of water, our cast iron radiators give out a differing amount of heat (measured in BTUs and Watts) depending on the style. Our BTU calculator will help you to understand your radiator output.

Do I use an inhibitor in cast iron radiators?

We recommend the use of a radiator inhibitor (also known as a central heating inhibitor or heating system inhibitor), in conjunction with your radiator to preserve the life and health of your boiler. Radiator inhibitors act as a guard against the damaging effects of corrosion and lime scale, maintaining the energy efficiency of the boiler and extending system life.

How do I make sure that I have the right output for my room?

To make sure that you have the correct size cast iron radiator for your room you need to use our BTU calculator.

This calculates the output needed for the size of your room. This is a very simple way of calculating your output needed. The BTU calculator will ask you a few simple questions.

What size cast iron radiator do I need for my room?

The size cast iron radiator needed to heat your room would depend on your room dimensions, which room it is i.e. bedroom, whether your room is north facing, has double glazed windows and door to the outside. UKAA have a handy online BTU calculator which works out how many BTUs (British Thermal Units) and Watts you need to heat your room.

Each cast iron radiator section has a BTU & Watts rating so you can be sure to have the correct size radiator for your room.

For example, if you needed a BTU output of 3,823 or a watts output of 1,123. A Victorian 760mm tall cast iron radiator gives an output of 386 BTU’s / 113 Watts per section you would need a Victorian 760mm tall 10 section cast iron radiator, this will give you enough heat for your room.

Are cast iron radiators eco friendly?

Cast iron radiators are eco friendly as they have an excellent heat conductivity and density, cast iron radiators are extremely energy-efficient and work particularly well with many modern renewable heating systems. They offer unrivalled heat retention and will utilise the natural warmth generated from the ground or air to heat the area well. Cast iron radiators take a little more time to heat up but they stay warmer for a lot longer. A cast iron radiator will still be warm an hour or two after you have turned your heating off.

Cast iron radiator valves have made unprecedented advances, in terms of saving energy, within the last few decades too. Thermostatic valves are economical as it is a self-regulating valve that works by changing the flow of hot water into a radiator. When the room temperature changes, a pin in the valve head moves the valve body causing it either to open or close to allow or stop the water going into the radiator making them more efficient.

Can I replace my steel radiator with a cast iron radiator?

Yes, you can replace your steel radiator with a traditional cast iron radiator. The same pipework can be used for a cast iron radiator as a steel radiator. If you let us know the size of your pipe to pipe measurement we can build you a bespoke cast iron radiator as close as possible to those measurements for you.

What is the difference between a section and a column on a cast iron radiator?

The difference between a section and a column on a cast iron radiator is a section is each individual casted piece of radiator that is then fixed together to make up the length of the radiator. A column on a cast Iron radiator refers to the number of vertical columns within each section, if you were to look at the radiator from a side angle you will see the columns that make up the depth of the cast iron radiator.

What is the difference between BTU and Watts?

The key difference between BTU and Watts is that BTU measures energy, which is a stand-alone physical property whereas Watts measures the rate of transfer of energy that is always associated with a time factor. Yes, you can fit either thermostatic or manual valves to your cast iron radiators. You can fit either straight, angled or corner valves to suit your pipework.

Do I need to fit wall stays on my cast iron radiator?

UKAA do recommend fitting a wall stay to your cast iron radiator. These are a safety feature used to secure your cast iron radiator to the wall to ensure that your radiator does not fall over or your pipe work gets disturbed. UKAA sell two types of wall stays for our cast iron radiators rear or front mounted. They come in lots of different finished to compliment your cast iron radiators. Whether you choose rear or front mounted wall stays for your cast iron radiator this is purely a personal choice.

How many wall stays do I need for my cast iron radiators?

It is recommend that you use wall stays for your cast iron radiators they will firmly fix your radiator to the wall to prevent any potential accidents in the unlikely event of them being pulled over. You will need one wall stay for every 10 sections of radiator. For example a 20 section cast iron radiator will require two wall stays.

What is the difference between a hand burnished finish and a satin polished finish?

There is a very subtle difference between a hand burnished cast iron radiator and a satin polished cast iron radiator. The satin finish has a subtle sheen giving it more of a matt finish as opposed to a shiny finish on a hand burnished radiator. Both processes are very labour intensive and time consuming but it is one of our most stunning finishes which oozes opulence.

What is a bare metal finish cast iron radiator?

A cast iron radiator in bare metal is a finish where all the manufacturing marks are left visible. The bare metal finishes give the cast iron radiator an industrial look. The cast iron radiators are then finished with a clear lacquer topcoat. A bare metal finish can be achieved on any style cast iron radiator from the simple clean lines of the Victorian cast iron radiator to the more decorative Rococo cast iron radiator.

Do you provide paint samples of the colour for my cast iron radiator?

UKAA can send out colour swatches of the finishes available for the cast iron radiators. This enables you to take your time and choose the perfect colour in the comfort of your own home. Can I repaint my cast iron radiators?

The repainting of cast iron radiators can easily be done, please follow the below simple steps:

Firstly, rub the cast iron radiator down with fine sandpaper.
Then wash the cast iron radiator with a degreaser like sugar soap.
Allow the cast iron radiator to dry overnight.
Mask off areas like the bleed nipple and valves.
Spraying the cast iron radiators gives a professional finish but hand painting is also an option. It is better to do a few thinner coats of paint and build the colour up than one thick coat.

What is an antique finish?

UKAA offer lots of bespoke finishes on our cast iron radiators and the antique is a very popular finish. The antiquing process is all done by hand. The loose cast iron radiator sections are spray painted first and then once dry a antiquing paste is applied to achieve the antique look. This is a time consuming process however the end result is a beautiful cast iron radiator that will enhance any home be it of period style or contemporary.

How do you install an electric element to a cast iron radiator?

UKAA provide cast iron radiators suitable for electric elements. These cast iron radiators come fully assembled in a size, style and finish of your choice ready for you to fill and fit your electric element. Please follow the below simple instructions on how to fit an electric element to your new or existing cast iron radiator.

Firstly, the heating element is only suitable to be installed in the bottom of the radiator and it is recommend it is fitted by a qualified electrician.

Insert the electric element into the bottom of the radiator.
Using the loctite glue provided with your electric element put this around the thread of the heating element and screw into position.
Remove the left and right hand bushes at the top of the radiator to allow for air flow.
Slowly fill the radiator with your water and glycol mix from one end of the radiator only – it is important this is done slowly to avoid air bubbles or airlocks in the radiator. The heating element must be fully submerged in the water.

When the cast iron radiator is filled, screw the radiator bush back on the opposite side to the heating element (it is important a new graphite gasket is used) and fit the safety valve (the safety valves allows for pressure to be released).
Raise the cast iron radiator at an angle like below and carry on filling the radiator slowly to make sure there are no airlocks.

You must leave a 5% gap at the top of the cast iron radiator to allow for expansion.
Allow the water in the radiator to settle.
Fit the remaining bush (it is important a new graphite gasket is used).
The cast iron radiator is now ready for fitting to your electrical supply using a fuse spur – this is to be done by a professional only.

What is the difference between delta 50 and delta 60?

BTUs are used to calculate the heat output of a cast iron radiator. However, this heat output is affected by the temperature of the boiler supplying the cast iron radiator. Essentially, the performance of the boiler will affect the final BTU result of the cast iron radiator.

So, in order to calculate the BTU of a cast iron radiator, UKAA have to make some assumptions about the temperature of the boiler supplying the cast iron radiator when we are calculating BTU figures.

These assumptions about the temperature of the supplying boiler are known as Deltas. There are a number of different Deltas. At UKAA we use two different measures - Delta 50 and Delta 60. Delta 50 is based on a much lower expected boiler temperature. It factors in things like improved boiler insulation. Whereas Delta 60 is based on a higher boiler temperature.

These Delta ratings are worked out as follows: We take the flow out from the boiler (80°C)
We then minus the room temperature of 20°C.
So, 80°C minus 20°C = 60 Delta T.

Do I need to reinforce my floor when fitting a cast iron radiator?

You do not need to reinforce your floor when fitting a cast iron radiator, they will sit perfectly well on standard floorboards without any issues.

How do I maintain my hand burnished cast iron radiators?

If your cast iron hand burnished radiator has dulled down over time or has developed a very fine surface rust follow these easy instructions. Use either a very fine wire wool or a scotch-brite pad and rub gently over the surface. Then use a soft cloth and rub the surface over with a lubricant like 3-1 duck oil.

How do I maintain my satin polish cast iron radiators?

If your satin polish finish cast iron radiator has dulled down over time or has developed a very fine surface rust follow these easy instructions. Use either very fine wire wool or a scotch-brite pad and rub gently over the surface to remove the surface rust/brighten the radiator. Then use a soft cloth and rub the surface over with a lubricant like 3-1 duck oil.

Why do larger cast iron radiators come in two parts?

There are two reasons why your large cast iron radiators would be delivered in two parts. One reason is for ease of transport as the larger radiators would overhang the pallet. The other reason is that cast iron radiators are heavy and so providing them in smaller more manageable parts makes it easier for you to move them into your property and your plumber to handle safely. A joining tool and instructions are provided with every large radiator and this is fully refundable once finished with and returned. It is very easy for your plumber to connect the cast iron radiator parts together onsite making one large cast iron radiator. Full instructions will be on your pallet.
